It was not until after her return to modeling and working with a handful of pinup photographers that Monroe found success. However, her roles were limited to those with few lines, and in 1947, she was released from her contract. She delved into acting early on, and began her career in cinema with a contract that tied her to 20th Century Fox. One of Hollywood's quintessential sex symbols, Norma Jeane Mortenson adopted the name Marilyn Monroe after a short stint with the stage name Carole Lind (after Carole Lombard and Jenny Lind). She showed us that sensuality was worth exploring, not repressing, and that the boundaries around our sexual desires could be fun, and intriguing, when we, as women, were in charge of our own fate. Despite the fact that she ended up with little money and spent her final years, up until her death at age 85, living quietly with her brother, Page is often regarded as having been a major component in women's liberation on the sexual front. Page's legacy, however, is a bit more sunny. Page was known to be somewhat fearless, and similar to Marilyn Monroe in both the respect that she often laughed off her sex appeal, and that her life (although much longer than Monroe's) was plagued by personal sadness, federal investigation, and a string of marriages (three to be exact, on both accounts) that ended in divorce. But, with her playful personality and unabashed attitude toward nudity, she quickly became seen as a premier player in the pinup imagery and adult film industry - which, at that time, was rather quaint by modern comparison. She didn't begin modeling until 1950, well after pinup photography and paintings became popular. It was the realm of the starlets, the envelope pushers, and the brazen.Įasily one of the most recognizable classic pinup beauties, Bettie Page came to pinup fame rather late in the game. Pinups were an arena reserved for the untouchable - the actresses, models, and singers who society and Hollywood placed upon fantastic pedestals. At that time, the genre was somewhat underground, and generally not the sort of photograph many women would hang on their wall (despite the fact that many men had no qualms doing so), much less pose for of their own volition. During World War II, when the genre really took hold, pinup photographs supplemented soldiers overseas and were supplied, often for free, by many gentleman's magazines. Pinup hasn't always been so accessible, or acceptable, though. But pinup today would be nothing without the classic pinup beauties who popularized the genre early on. So much so that you might be wondering how to do a pinup shoot of your own.Īnd why not? It's a fun experience, and an art that has been perfected by the many talented boudoir and glamour photographers (and artists) around the world. In fact, you may be surprised by the women you know who have had pinup portraits taken. No longer reserved just for actresses and models, many fashion forward, regular women have taken pinup back, and embraced it as a way to express feminine strength, beauty, and of course, sensuality. While Dita Von Teese and countless other burlesque and adult film celebrities have continued the art of advertising through pinup photographs over the years, thanks to apps and online communities, the art of the pinup has made its way closer to home (like the super body positive Instagram pinup community). The retro pinup genre has been experiencing a revival and a revolution, but classic pinups have been around for some time.

Even the humble baker’s yeast, which underpins our everyday food and drinks, can be used in the lab to study human genetics or modified to produce important compounds. We live on a planet of finite resources, so it’s thanks to these little fungi doing the work to recycle them that our natural world can exist at all.Ĭountless fungi play key roles in modern society: they can be a source of medicines such as antibiotics and immunosuppressants, industrial enzymes for detergents and manufacturing, and new biomaterials to replace plastics. There are also the recyclers (“saprotrophs”), which break down organic matter and return nutrients to the soil in the continuous cycle of life and death. With our increased global travel and trade, not to mention our contributions to climate change, we’re creating a perfect opportunity for new fungal pathogens to emerge and thrive.īut there’s so much more than just the pathogens. These tend to be the fungi that get the most attention, both in terms of public awareness and scientific research and not without some good reason. Yes, some will be pathogens, which can cause disease in plants and animals. But that doesn’t mean they’re unimportant. These microscopic fungi, or more simply “microfungi”, are invisible to the naked eye, and so for a long time have remained under the radar. We’ve barely scratched the surface, and I mean that quite literally – countless fungi will be underground and inside other organisms. Other recent estimates for fungal diversity have ranged widely from 2.2 million to 165 million species – but no matter which you go with, the numbers are all far greater than the 150,000 fungi which scientists have already found and described. To put that in context, that would mean our planet is inhabited by 15 times more fungi than plants. The latest estimate of the total number of fungal species is 6.2 million. I really can’t emphasize enough how much of an oversight this is. The proportion of scientific papers published each year for animals, plants and fungi. Long story short, fungi are incredibly understudied compared to their sister kingdoms of animals and plants. This leads to fewer researchers studying fungi that can teach students about fungi and … you get the picture. Yet this is the typical experience in both school and higher education (in the UK and the US at least) and, unsurprisingly, when you don’t teach students about fungi, they don’t go on to study fungi. Given that fungi are a whole kingdom of species that, alongside animals and plants, belong to the major domain of planet Earth’s multicellular life together called the “ eukaryotes”, this is perhaps surprising. For one thing, fungi barely appeared in my degree, and when they did it was usually in the negative context of causing disease. If only I had an anecdote about my time as a biology undergraduate looking down the microscope at some spores for the first time, overcome by their sheer majesty – but that would be fiction. I can’t remember the moment when I first decided to study fungi. In the first study of its kind, to our knowledge, in a major seed bank, we found hundreds of fungi hidden inside seeds from the Millennium Seed Bank, some of which are likely to be species new to science and could be crucial for the future of plant health. We’d extracted enough DNA that the freezer, stuffed full of tubes, threatened to revolt.įinally, the time had come for me to analyze all the data, and discover just what we’d managed to find after all these months of work. We’d built a fungus city: great tower-blocks of petri dishes stacked on the lab workbenches, with different colors, textures and shapes of fungi all emerging inside. We’d spent countless hours meticulously sterilizing seeds (1,710, to be specific), filling the lab with a cacophony of rattling as we shook them in bleach. Once the explosive is created select it and click on the detonate button from the right side menu and the block will be destroyed. Will not pump water higher than block height of outlet pipe Outlet. Then select to construct explosives from the landscaping menu and place them on the block you need to destroy. also exist a few different versions but most have some pipes between two levees with entry/exit on the outside You will find the item under Water tab. Once you have constructed both the buildings power them up using a power generator. The paper mill will be under the wood menu and the explosive factory under landscaping. Dynamites are created using paper in this game so you also need a paper mill. To create dynamite you need to construct an explosive factory. Timberborn How To Destroy Block Or Terrain Using Dynamite Make sure to turn off the water dump by pressing the pause button on the right side menu else you will waste a lot of water resources and your beavers might get thirsty. You can fill up that pool using a water dump and then store it for drought or construct a new water pump for the pool. 5 main axes focused on a new concept of pump. We design and build our pumps, keeping in mind the performance, constant innovation, quality, the environment and a commitment to the client. A hydraulic ram is a clever device invented over 200 years ago that can pump water uphill with no other external source of power except for the. Hydroo offers a wide range of pumps, which meet different technical needs, offering quality solutions in water pumping systems. There is also a machine called Water Dump that will take your water resources and pour them into the canal or make a pool of water by destroying blocks using dynamite. A quick description and demo of this ingenious pump. On Update 3, the Small Water Tank became the Small Tank. It must be placed on even ground and a path must be connected to it for it to be usable. The small water tank is built with 15 logs. The other method is to make a canal from the main district to another district by destroying blocks using dynamite. This means a single small water tank will support roughly 14 beavers for a day. There are two ways to deal with this situation the first one is by transport and distributing resources among the district. Now the problem is when you a make the new district a bit far away from the river you will need water in that district as well. You can make a water pump to collect water from the river that flows around the map. If the amount of water required by your population ain’t fulfilled they will die early. Water is one of the main resources that you need to keep on collecting in order to satisfy your beaver’s thirst. Timberborn is a building survival strategy game developed by Mechanistry. It's a swift action, so you can attack during this round. This maneuver acts as a one round time stop. And last but not least - Moment of Alactrity. Greater Insightful Strike is twice as strong as the regular one, and there are ways to skyrocket your concentration roll. My Wizard/Warblade/Jade Phoenix Mage abused the hell out of Iron Heart Endurance - healing twice your level every second round while beating on enemies was -very- strong. Pick what you feel is best.Īs for level 6, three awesome maneuvers here. Level 5 is pretty forgettable, nothing really worth using IMO. Otherwise, Ruby Nightmare Blade is strong if you focus on slow, powerful hits. Also, I recommend Lightning Recovery, it's a free, addittional attack with a bonus to hit which does not cost you an action. Extremely useful when dealing with many foes. Others aren't that spectacular.Ĥth level maneuvers -> Mithral Tornado. Iron Heart Surge is simply amazing, allowing you to shrug off ability damage, level drain and many other things. White Raven Tactics is broken in PnP, but doesn't seem to work in NWN (I didn't test it very thoroughly though). Insightful Strike lets you hit for very nice damage. Stacking is not implemented (hard to code). Blood in the Water can be nice, but it's just a +1 to hit and damage. From the stances, Punishing Stance is worth looking at. Honestly, things at level 1 and 2 are useful, but nothing gamebreaking. At level 9, level 3 maneuvers are available. So, if you enter warblade at 5, you have access to maneuvers of level 2. Overall, entering warblade late lets you get higher level maneuvers right away, which is important as there's no maneuver swapping implemented. There are requirements, which can make getting a maneuver impossible. Also, try to write down character progress, noting which maneuvers on which levels will you take. In general, I recommend multiclassing and entering Warblade as late as possible. And before that, it was dropped by The Devourer of Gods in the now-removed Prepare to Cry mode.Well, I played warblade many times and it's one of my favorite classes, sooo.ĭiamond Mind and Iron Heart are definitely functional, but you need to know what to pick. Before that, the Murasama was a Revengeance-exclusive weapon dropped by The Devourer of Gods. Prior to being located in Underworld Arsenal Labs, the Murasama was generated in now-removed Underworld Shrines. The weapon's tooltip, "There will be blood!", is a reference to the lyrics of "The Only Thing I Know For Real", which is Sam's boss theme, specifically the line "The only thing I know for real- There will be blood! Shed!".The fact the weapon is "ID locked" is also a reference to Sam, for the inability of using his weapon immediately after defeating him, unlike the other bosses in Metal Gear Rising. The fast, blurred cutting animation that the item uses is based on the blurring visuals shown when the player or Sam uses the sword. The Murasama is a reference to a weapon of the same name and similar appearance wielded by the character Jetstream Sam from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The Murasama has a Draedon's Log entry dedicated to it, also found in the Underworld Bio-center Lab, where it is depicted alongside the Phaseslayer. When this is paired with a night owl potion or a night vision helmet, it generates even more light. If the player is playing with the retro or trippy light settings, then the Murasama behaves as an immense source of light. The Murasama only deals 40% damage to Ares and its weapons and 35% damage to Supreme Calamitas' Supreme Soul Seekers. The Murasama can be used at any point before defeating Yharon if the character's name is "Jetstream Sam" or "Samuel Rodrigues".Its swing range is also fixed, despite the slashes appearing at varying distances. The Murasama's attack speed is slower than what is visually indicated when using it, at 25 use time (2.4 swings per second). As such, it also has the most range of all true melee weapons.Despite not behaving like normal swords or spears, it is considered a true melee weapon. The exception to this rule is enemies that move through tiles. The Murasama cannot attack through walls. "They are asleep," said Philippe comfortingly. "Then I hope to goodness we don't meet one today." "I have never seen one, vous comprenez, but Bernard has shot one. Many bears of a bigness incredible." His scarlet-gloved hands sketched in the air something of the dimensions of an overgrown grizzly. Mary Stewart has a deft touch with humor and excels in creating sympathetic young boy characters, and Philippe is one of my favorites: "We have got bears," confided Philippe, in the tone of one inviting congratulations. Nine Coaches Waiting takes as its theme an old poem called The Revenger's Tragedy, in which "a tempter's list of pleasures" (the coaches, the palace, banquets, etc.) is "designed to lure a lonely young female to a luxurious doom." Is Linda being lured by Raoul and his father to ignore the dangers to Philippe, discounting them as accidents? This theme is followed through in kind of an amusing way with nine "coaches" or rides in planes, autos and, I think, even a wagon being taken by Linda during the course of the story. There are some really lovely Cinderella-like scenes between Raoul and Linda as she is preparing for a fancy ball at the chateau, sewing her own dress and-wait for it-losing one of her shoes, and later, when Raoul finally finds her at the ball. Raoul is kind of a 50's alpha male, but he has a vulnerability that tugs at Linda's heart, even as she's afraid he'll break it. And there are too many people who would be materially benefitted by Philippe's death: his uncle Leon de Valmy and his wife, who would own the Valmy fortune if Philippe dies their loyal servants and the suave and handsome Raoul, Leon's son, who has managed to quickly sweep Linda off her feet. which makes it all the more upsetting when near-fatal accidents begin to happen to Philippe. Philippe is distant at first, but quickly warms to Linda's company, and she soon grows very fond of him. This makes for some awkward but funny situations as she tries to speak schoolgirl French and pretend not to understand when people speak it fluently. Linda's father was English and her mother French, but since she was hired primarily to teach Philippe English, Linda decides to hide the French part of her heritage and her fluency with that language. Philippe is also an orphan, and is living in the care of his aunt and uncle. Linda Martin, a young woman who grew up as an orphan, has been hired to be the governess of 9 year old Philippe de Valmy, the heir to the Valmy fortune, who lives in a luxurious but lonely chateau in the mountains of eastern France. It's not terrifically deep or mysterious, but it's well-written and a favorite comfort read, and my love for it is quite unreasonable at this point, so just realize that I'm likely to hurl insults or furniture at anyone who questions the excellence of this novel. I can't tell you how many times I've re-read this book. Nine Coaches Waiting is my favorite Mary Stewart book. Mary Stewart is - by far - my favorite author in the romantic suspense genre. This quaint restaurant truly is a hidden gem of Chester County and worth the trek. Out in a rural Chester County post office sits a fine dining BYOB, Birchrunville Café. The kitchen also borrows recipes from the du Pont family (the original owners of Longwood) cookbook to make nostalgic dishes. The menu features local produce and local goods such as cheeses and meats. This fine dining restaurant is like a two-for-one since there are views of the stunning gardens (and a Longwood Gardens ticket is required to get to the restaurant) and an upscale dining experience. Right in the heart of another Chester County institution is 1906 at Longwood Gardens. Cher Feury also pays homage to the county’s agricultural roots by featuring as many local ingredients as possible in his dishes. Chester County has many delicious restaurants, including a handful of high-end options. I prefer Ginza for the quality and variety of sushi, but if you're really a sushi fan, go downtown.
